Process optimization for industrial furnaces
The first step in the recyling process of non-ferrous metal is to cast huge blocks of metal from the various small
pieces of metal by heating them. Afterwards the blocks are heated to a nearly homogenous temperature in order to roll
them to bands or other shapes. The energy consumption during this process is significant - thus optimization methods
should be used to control the heating and cooling phase. Mathematically, methods of optimal control of nonlinear
parabolic boundary value problems are used to solve this task.
The project began in October 1993 and was realized until April 1997 with the partners
Bildungsministerium für Bildung und Forschung (October 1993 - December 1996),
Forschungsfonds des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz (January 1996 - April 1997), the research group Numerik
of the University of Trier and the external partners Fa. GIWEP (Mülheim, Ruhr) and G. Woelk
(RWTH Aachen).
